Our Intro on Author: Melanie Milburne. She also has a new book out this month, Rival's One-Night Rule.
Melanie Milburne is a bestselling author of contemporary romance for Harlequin Mills & Boon. Inspired by her first romance novel at seventeen, she fulfilled a lifelong dream of becoming a romance writer—a passion that began when she started creating stories at just five years old. With nearly 100 novels published and numerous industry awards and nominations, including a recent Romantic Book of the Year 2025 nomination for Illicit Italian Nights, Melanie continues to delight readers with emotionally rich love stories. She writes from her home in beautiful Hobart, Tasmania, where she lives with her husband and their two cheeky toy poodles. When she's not writing, Melanie loves spending time with her three grandchildren, who bring plenty of joy, laughter, and inspiration to her life.

I write contemporary Modern romance for Harlequin Mills and Boon in London and earlier in my career I wrote Medical romances as well.
I live in Tasmania and love the weather because it’s different every day- sometimes every hour!
My life’s a lot more complicated than most people realise. Firstly, I’m married to a general surgeon and although he plans to retire soonish, it hasn’t happened yet. He’s currently doing an Outback locum with the Flying Doctor Service in Queensland.
Secondly, I have some spinal issues that make sitting at the computer difficult, so I’m playing around with writing on my phone, using a recliner chair, etc. Dictation software doesn’t suit my process but I haven’t ruled it out yet.
Reading from a young age inspired me to write. I discovered I was a writer as a child in Grade Four when I won a writing competition. I overheard two teachers talking about my story and it boosted my confidence in such a way that I had this deep conviction that one day I would be published.
I discovered romance novels in my late teens and read literally thousands. But I didn’t write my first book for Harlequin until I was 40, which was due to a number of factors out of my control- a seriously ill child and my husband’s crazy hours.
I like to write in the morning but not first thing like some of my colleagues do. By morning I mean between the hours 9-12, then I’ll have lunch, often with a friend to stop me being too isolated, then I’ll do some more writing in the afternoon. That’s the plan anyway. At the moment my spinal issues are messing with my schedule! But as frustrating as that is, I tell myself that if I just think about my characters and their situation it will help me write the book once my symptoms improve.
I am motivated to write because I truly believe I was put on this earth to be a storyteller. It’s the thing I love doing best and I never run out of ideas. I have a long list in my notes folder in my phone of story ideas and often I’ll read through them and combine two story ideas or tropes and away I go.
I hope you enjoy my 99th novel Rivals One Night Rule.

Rivals' One-Night Rule (Wilde Billionaire Brothers Book 2)
Can they resist…
the laws of attraction?
Cynical divorce lawyer Jack never mixes business with pleasure. Until a case puts him head-to-head with his fiercest rival, Sylvie, the only woman who gets under his skin. He’s overcome by a primal need to wreck her icy facade and unleash the simmering heat between them…
Sylvie refuses to blur the lines of professionalism—especially not for arrogant playboy Jack. Yet, to her horror, he awakens a hunger she can’t deny, leading to a sinfully delicious, strictly one-night indulgence. As passion obliterates hatred between epic rivals, who will come out on top?

ReplyDeleteHi Rachel, thank you. So do I! it's so frustrating not being able to write for long periods anymore.
DeleteListing ideas and prompts is such a good idea.
ReplyDeleteI understand the problem with using dictation. It makes a lot of mistakes, and you have to go back and edit everything anyway, so you don’t save much time.
ReplyDeleteHi Linda
DeleteYes, dictation can be tricky and it requires a lot of editing. It doesn't suit my process at all. Thanks for your comment.
I appreciate you sharing your writing process. I’m sorry you have challenges which impact your ability to write. I have neck problems and have had to make the switch to audiobooks but this is not nearly the same.
ReplyDeleteOh, that must be so frustrating for you. Holding a book in your hands is so much nicer, isn't it? I hope your neck improves.
DeleteGreat interview!
