Anna Hackett and Time Thief!

Today we are chatting to Australian author Anna Hackett about Time! The too precious commodity, everyone laments the lack of! Over to Anna.....

Time is Precious

Like many, I’m a wife, mother of a toddler, writer, reader, paranormal and sci-fi fan, cook, laundry lady, cleaner, amazing singer of Elmo songs…the list goes on! My time is precious. There are never enough hours in the day and far too often, when I watch my little boy sleeping, I wish I could have spent more time with him or made him smile more during the day.

I’m also someone who loves a great story – whether I’m reading it, writing it or watching it on the television. Unfortunately the time I have to read isn’t quite as much as it used to be. I might wish I had the ability to stop time (like Bay in Time Thief) but instead I found another solution – short stories.

For me, short stories are like that first nip of a strong drink. A quick, intense, one-two punch to the system. I can fit them into an evening of reading , sometimes during a rare bubble bath or when my little man is napping.

Better still, I love writing them. Distilling a story down to the essentials – action, adventure, sexy characters and an emotion-packed happily ever after. Some people say short stories don’t work, that they’re too short, that the story isn’t long enough and leaves you wanting more.  Well, I believe a good story is never long enough, whatever its length.

  1. Good point! If a story is well told and draws me in, it's the right length! I haven't really tried my hand at writing shorts yet - my ideas just seem to be much longer :)

    1. Hi Jemi!

I wonder what you will write when you start with your long ideas?

      Thanks for dropping by!

  2. I prefer short stories myself, both reading and writing, because to me, it takes even more skill to get something across, emotions, ideas, etc., in a shorter amount of space. Time Thief sounds great~

  3. Hi, Anna,
I write them, but I'm not a big fan of short stories. Lately, I've read a few good novellas.

  4. Hi Jemi -- writing short requires a few different skills than writing longer, but at the heart of it all, writing a good story is writing a good story! Hope you find the right idea to try your hand at a short.

  5. Hi Shelly -- Thanks! And I'm with you -- I think writing short is more challenging. A lot more to get into less words. Hope you'll give Time Thief a try.

  6. Hi J.L. -- I'm using "short stories" here to include all short fiction. Time Thief is actually a novella (25,500 words). I'm a huge novella fan but I've written shorter as well. Good luck with your short story writing.

  8. Hi Leslie - I 100% agree with you. Leaning to write lean and mean sharpens your storytelling.

  14. Hi Golden Eagle -- reading anthologies was how I first started reading short stories too. Anthologies used to be one of the only ways to find them but now that digital publishing has taken off, I see more and more short stories around.
