1. If you have a pen name, can you explain how you came up with it?
My pen name is my great grandmother's name. Ella Carey was my maternal grandfather's mother. She had quite an illustrious ancestry- Ella's mother's godmother was the queen! I just wanted to use Ella's name because I really like it.

2. What are a few things we would find in or on your desk?

Good question! You would find notes from my meetings with my editor about the book I am editing now (book three), a small notebook with red apples on the cover in which I write down ideas for novels and a pen. Apart from my computer, that's it. I like to keep my workspace clutter free!

3. What motivates you to write?

I adore writing. But secrets inspire me to write- anything that intrigues me will draw me in. Untold histories- people's pasts, places such as Paris.  I think life in general inspires me. As a writer you are trying to get to truth and understanding of the world.

4. Share something about yourself no one else knows?

I start every day with a piece of good quality chocolate- isn't that naughty!! But it just seems civilised to me.

5. Tell us about your book...

San Francisco cafe owner Anna Young is shocked when her grandfather reveals that she is part of an old German aristocratic family- even more so when he asks her to return to the family estate just out of Berlin to retrieve something he left there in 1940. But as Anna uncovers all sorts of secrets, she is left wanting to know why her grandfather abandoned his past. The book dovetails between 1930s Paris and Germany, and 2010.

  3. Great to see this interview with a delightful author. Lovely learning more about Ella. I'm enjoying your book, Ella, but going to China has slowed me down. I'm back but unwell. I'll get it finished asap.

  4. I love the idea of honoring someone, such as a grandmother, by using their name as a pen name. I've done something like that with character names. :)
