Romance
Goes To The Stars, with a Giveaway
We have Australia’s queen of romance, Valerie
Parv, talking about her latest book, Birthright. This novel blends romance with
her other passion, space travel, resulting in a story which one reviewer
describes as “a romantic suspense like no other I have read before.”
Valerie around the web:
Over to you, Valerie...
Hello and thanks for inviting me to talk a
little about my new writing adventure.
Amazingly, this year marks the 30th
anniversary of my first romance novel, Love’s
Greatest Gamble (Harlequin Mills & Boon, 1982). To see where the time
went, I only need to look at the shelves of books and hundreds of translations since
then; everything from romances and suspense, to non-fiction and the craft of
writing. The best-known is The Art ofRomance Writing (Allen & Unwin)
You’d think after so many books, I’d have
done it all. But if I’ve learned anything in this business, it’s that there are
always new challenges. I’m excited that Birthright
is my debut digital-first novel on Amazon and Nook, with other formats and
print edition to come.
Having a book I can’t physically hold feels
strange. How do I pat it, and display it casually on my coffee table? The
upside is knowing it’s accessible to anyone with an ereader. No ereader? Amazon’s
free Kindle app means the book can be download directly to a PC, laptop or
cellphone. Excuse me while I have a “squee” moment.
The coolest discovery I’ve made is that I
can “sign” and personalize my ebook just as I would a hard copy. Readers go to http://www.authorgraph.com/authors/valerieparv
to make it happen.
What’s next? I loved the alien characters
in Birthright so much that I’m
currently writing a follow-on book, Earthbound,
with a final chapter in the saga, Homeworld,
after that.
And can I mention that I’ve also written an
original romance movie script this year which is scheduled for production next
year, and my agent, Linda Tate, has volunteered to help cast the male lead.
What? A writer has to do her research.
It’s been suggested that I should think
about writing my life story, but how can I when I’m so busy living it? Can’t
wait for the next exciting installment.
What gets you excited about Valerie’s books?
What would you like to see happen next? A comment will win a download of Birthright for Kindle, personally authorgraphed by Valerie.

Wow- you are one busy (and talented) woman! I love finding out all the sub-genres of romance, and this is one I certainly haven't heard of. It sounds great!
ReplyDeleteHi Shelly, I'm not sure it actually exists as a sub-genre. One of the exciting aspects of ebooks is the ease an author can cross genres, blending the best of several so we're seeing new books that defy categorizing.
DeleteHi Valerie!
DeleteWelcome to Romance Reader!
Hi Shelly!
DeleteThis is an amazing story! Love among the Aliens. A fantasy on a fabulous world created by Valerie!
Hi Nas, thanks so much.
DeleteHi Nas! Hi Valerie! Like wow! Amazing author! Love the sound of this book and the sound of an author so fresh and excited after a long career.
ReplyDelete*Waves to Denise* one of the joys of writing is being unable to know it all. There are always new challenges where we can "boldly go."
DeleteHi Denise!
DeleteLovely to see you!
I love that I can download the Kindle and Kobo apps on my iPod Touch.
ReplyDeleteThat would be a dream opportunity to get to help cast the male character from a book you wrote. Too bad, Valerie, it's your agent not you who gets this honor. :)
Hi Stina, actually that's a bit tongue-in-cheek. We would both love to cast the male lead, doesn't mean we'll get to do it. The movie is a completely original story. I'll write the book-of-the-movie later this year. Hmm. Maybe I can cast the star as a cover model...
DeleteHi Stina!
DeleteThanks for coming by!
That's really cool. I've heard of signed ebooks, but haven't seen one.
ReplyDeleteIt's great seeing Valerie here. Congrats to her on her 30th anniversary!
Thanks Medeia. It was cool enough "signing" the contract with the publisher electronically. A real buzz that I'm "signing" books the same way. Thanks for stopping by.
DeleteHi Medeia,
DeleteGood to see you here!
Congrats on the new release. I think it's wonderful that you're so excited about a new project after writing so many books.
ReplyDeleteHi Shelley,
DeleteI suppose switching genres (or subgenres) and variety is the key to keeping the excitement fresh.
Congratulations on your new book! It sounds like a good one.
ReplyDeleteGreat to see you here, Sherry. It's something different all right.
DeleteHi Nas, Hi Valerie. Neat post! I love this story for reeling me in from the first page, I knew I was onto something special and the story amazed me to no end. I'm not a huge sci fi fan but I love Birthright and I love that I've had a positive experience with stepping outside of my comfort zone and trying something different :)
ReplyDeleteHi Tash,
DeleteIt's nice to step out of your comfort zone once in a while - a sort of adventure really.
Congrats, Valerie! The book looks fantastic! And AuthorGraph is awesome. Now readers don't have to travel to a book signing to get an autograph from their favorite author. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for coming over, Cherie. Yes, AuthorGraph is amazing.
DeleteI just adore the cover of Birthright - it just screams for you to pick up the book!
ReplyDeleteNice to see you here, Maria
DeleteThe 30th anniversary of your first book? Wow!! A big congratulations!! Good to see you're still writing.
ReplyDeleteValerie is busy! How fun and exciting to be in a business for 30 years and still have new adventures and challenges. This keeps things interesting, doesn't it?
