Chatting to Mickey J. Corrigan

Q: You seem to always write about women who get in trouble. Is this based on your own background and experience?

A: No. I'm boring. Married to the same guy for almost 25 years. Mother of a grown son who is a college grad, employed and successful. I lead a humdrum, everyday life in South Florida, and I'm not even a party girl. Which is why I write about wild women. My characters get to do all the nasty, crazy, daring and fun things I don't do. They drink too much, sleep with the wrong guys, break the law, and take men for all they've got. They can seem bad to the bone, but they have big hearts and lead big lives.

Q: So you've not been an alcoholic? A drug abuser? A prostitute? A sugar baby? A con artist? A cheat?

A: No. And I'm not a sexy young twenty-five year old with a model's body either. But I can feel like one when I'm in that dream world of writing. I guess it's like acting. You play the roles you'd like to experience so that you can do so without taking the risk. It feels real enough.

Q: Have you ever written about a woman who wasn't an emotional mess?

A: Not yet. But that's an interesting challenge. I wonder if I could write a book like that…
