In 1986, Ellen Ripley of Alien fame, the queen of all tough chicks, boarded the ship to head back to the planet LV-426 and joined forces with Hicks, Hudson, Bishop and of, she picked up Newt at their destination.

My cat Hicks passed away in 2009. Our new cat, Hudson, sleeps on my decks and rests his head on my hand while I type.  Bishop, my son’s cat, is having a little trouble these days dealing with the new kitten that was supposed to be named Newt,  but wasn’t.

Tough chicks have had an impact on me from the screen, and more than just the pet names.   I have been into self-defense since I was fifteen.  I took ten years of martial arts. I studied sword fighting.

I loved Ripley and what she brought to the screen. I loved that in this high energy sci fi flick there is a romance budding that is subtle but undeniable.  Ripley and Hicks, they were good together. He was a hero who could stand by his tough woman and not feel threatened. He knew when she could get the job done and he knew when to rescue.  Both roles worked for him.

Seeing AlienS in 1986 pointed me in the direction of tough heroines like Jaime Walsh in WITH A VENGEANCE.  Her man, first a best friend before a lover, he knew how to be with her as a support as well as a partner  She never intimated him, not even after their first meaning on a training assignment when she came out standing and he was on the floor.  She kicked his ass and it solidified their relationship in ways no one, eight years prior to the events in WITH A VENGENACE, could ever predict.

Jaime needed Stephen to protect her from herself as she moves through her life tougher than average, capable of things everyday people don’t understand.  Stephen needed Jaime.  The woman he can care for, be there for, be with.  It may have taken them eight years to figure out just how much that they needed it … but ahhh … it’s theirs. Happily Ever After.

WITH A VENGEANCE

The more she wanted out, the more they dragged her back in!
Daughter to murdered CIA officers, niece to a deputy director, Jaime Walsh has never known life outside the world of espionage. Until a high-action case in Buenos Aires leaves her gutted. Physically, emotionally…and professionally.

She’d planned for her long-overdue vacation to be a time to rest and reassess. With her longtime partner Stephen not far behind, it’s a tropical paradise away from work. A paradise where boundaries will be tested.

From their training days, Stephen Reid has watched Jaime kick ass while performing what has become his second job—watching her back. But now his feelings have grown.

As best friends look at each other in a new light, they like what they see. And Jaime dreams of a new life outside “the company”.

Except someone from their past won’t be satisfied until Jaime and the man she loves are hunted to the brink of death. Now Jaime must find the strength to trust her heart and let go of her fear. Before she loses everything…
